A Journey Through the Rainforest

A rainforest is a beautiful habitat.

Come journey with us through a rainforest.

There are millions of species of animals in the rainforest. The animals like hot temperatures and heavy rainfall.  Andrew

Butterflies carry pollen as they fly from flower to flower drinking the sweet liquid called nectar.  Joshua

Some types of butterflies live for only a few days while others may live for almost a year.  Missy

The poison arrow frog is brightly colored. These colors are a warning to other animals that they are not good to eat.  Jenni

One of the members of the frog family measures less than one half inch and is the smallest frog in the world.  Lauren

Leafcutter ants cut pieces of leaves and flowers to carry back to their nest. These ants chew them into a damp mush which they put in their nest.  Mateo

Mushrooms grow on the mush and the ants eat the mushrooms.  Kaley

The scorpion is known for its painful and sometimes deadly sting. The largest scorpion may reach nearly 8 inches in length.  Marina

Scorpions are nocturnal. They eat insects and spiders.  Caroline

Toucans feed mostly on fruit which they reach with their very large brightly colored beaks. They live in flocks.  Dante

Toucans make their nests in noisy treetops where they live in holes. They can grow to be about two feet high.  Emily

The slow moving sloth hangs upside down from tree branches and almost never travels on the ground. They eat branches and leaves.  Jordan

Because the sloth spends most of its life hanging upside down, its fur grows the opposite direction than on most other animals. Green algae grows on its fur.

Many types of monkeys make their homes in the rainforest. Monkeys enjoy swinging from branches of trees.  Damian

The long strong tail of some monkeys is used as an extra hand. Many monkeys have brightly colored fur and faces.  Vivian

The smallest monkey of the rainforest is so small it can be held in a person’s hand.  Klein

The common iguana of the rainforest grows to seven feet in length. It lives in trees where it feeds on leaves and other plants.  Matthew

The hummingbird is one of the smallest birds in the world. It gets its name from the humming sound made by its wings.  Jack

A hummingbird is the only bird that can fly backwards. Some hummingbirds can fit inside a thimble.  Sophia

The anteater is a rare animal that lives in the tropical rainforest. It has a long slender snout.  Arianna

The anteater’s mouth is very small and it has no teeth, but its long, strong tongue can be about two feet long.  Jade

More snakes live in the tropics than anywhere else on earth. Snake skin is dry and smooth.

Snakes cannot hear sound, but rather sense sound through vibrations from the ground. All snakes are meat eaters.  Lexi

While most spiders probably live from one month to one year, the tarantula has been known to live up to twenty years.  Aaliyah

Some kinds of tarantulas can grow to the size of a dinner plate.  Adam

Is there a problem? Yes! Unfortunately the rainforest is being threatened by deforestation. They’re cutting down the trees!  Kyle

In the past 200 years we have lost more than half the world’s rainforests. Oh no!  Kaili

When the trees are cut down, the animals have no place to live. The animals face extinction. That means the animals die!  Maggie

Help us save the rainforests!

We need the trees to live!
